Google Sketchup Rules!

Being on Blogger has nothing to do with this... Google Sketchup just plain rocks. If I finish something nice, I'll post a picture (or link to where I've posted it.)

Sometimes the camera controls can be frustrating, but the controls for creating 3d objects are nearly miraculous they are so well thought out.

One thing, though; would be nice to be able to hold 3 or 4 and have it lock to thirds or quartiles along a segment instead of just endpoints and midpoints. Just a thought. (Or 5, 7, 9, etc... if you get my drift.)

Its ability to lock along axes, extrude perpedicularly, align easily to the position of other surfaces, divide existing surfaces (just draw on them, and you can create new surfaces out of old, instead of having to re-make the parent surface.)

Guess this stuff may have been in CAD for awhile... but CAD isn't free!

Cheers, Y'all.

Neat Link of the Day

Apparently, using their software (which might be something like Google Sketchup?) you can model stuff, and then send it to them and they machine it for you! Of course, its not free.

What a boon though, for the entrepreneurial among us!

The Mentality of Terror

Superb Piece by Theodore Dalrymple over at City Journal...

Reminds me of an earlier article I read. It seems that Islamism (or Salafism) is only successful in its propagation due to a volatile mix of post modern thinking and conditions combined with ancient ideologies. His point is too complex (well, until I read it again) to reiterate here in but length, so I'll just offer a few comments.

1. Actually interviewing a guy who wanted to be a suicide bomber was invaluable. Usually we paint these guys as caricatures of men, either as madmen or (alternatively) brave and greived 'freedom fighters' -- yet when we speak to them as men, they turn out also to be men. It does not make them any less our enemy that they are.

2. Combatting this will be difficult, especially with the multiculturalist attitude fueling futher mental segragation (note the muslim men think of themselves as completely seperate though they live similar lives-- and this is a source of their bitterness and troubles...) Britain (and other countries) with their post-modernist bent, oft-prejudiced & classist attitudes combined with turmoil in the middle east, might find it nearly impossible to remove this leprous strain of cultural corruption.

3. Islam the old religion of Mohammed has been left behind, here. Whatever its relevance to the modern world in the lives of the mujahdeen is unclear; mostly it is a tool that they use to torture themselves; desiring both the pleasures and freedoms of modernity coupled with the power and feeling of moral superiority of the antedelluvian. But neither in moderation, nor balance.

Plus, their counterparts in the physiognomy of imams and clerics do nothing to help, and don't even respect the most basic law of mankind: Hammurabi's Code. To put it simply, An eye for an eye means, you may take in justice no more than was taken from you. Sharia law, with its removal of fingers and whatnot, shows no respect for this, and creates a hotbed for feuding and bitterness. Wake up and smell the two millennia of the evolution of human intellect, boys...

Elitism: One more reason to loathe it...

Read Alan K. Henderson's entry here...

I find that this is the creeping suspcision, the underlying worry, the sensation of discomfort we often feel; are other people, truly no more 'equal' or in most ways qualified in any measurable sense, deciding that we are their wards? That they get to decide how to 'take care of us' as though we were children or pets instead of men?

I have said (Though not in this medium) that the worst way to punish a man is to coddle him... torture, death, exile-- all are tolerable, but to make him de facto a child-- that is what kills the soul.

After all, when we were children it was so because we could not reason for ourselves. Now being reasoning people, are we not responsible for ourselves-- as original sin suggests?

Those who would seek to take our liberty away from us should beware; anyone who still has it will Live Free, or Die.

The press has come to realise (perhaps not quickly enough) that they cannot for our own sake become a filter for our understanding and news. Some argue that they do it out of political motivation, or anti-americanism, and given my belief that there are rarely single causes, I would say all are responsible. But most of all, a feeling of elitism that has long poisoned mankind, and Americans in particular (think the various organizations that have popped up to prop up one's feeling of being 'elite'...)

The press must realise one day, that if they cannot be trusted to not try to manipulate us through their reporting, we will report our own news and make our own decisions about it. We only allow our government to do what it does -- by the people, of the people, for the people (prolly the wrong order, there...)

Eh, rambling again. Feel free to opine yourself on the lady's story, communism as paternalistic entity, liberty, et al.

WMD Docments Declassified

Some encouraging news here...

I'd like to say, "I told you so!" but I'm so tired of arguments about the war that I will just let the facts speak for themselves. Really, people; either you are a genuine pacifist or you aren't. Get it straight, and cut the petty objections.

Finally Adding Up...

Ed Driscoll links to some articles (and makes some comments) here.

The Case: Islamofascism, Salafism...
The Charge: Utopians of the same vein as Marxists, Nazis, Anarchists, ELF members...
The Verdict: Guilty, mother*******s!
(censored for your protection. ;)

Its an explanation of Islam that does not force us to view all of Islam as necessarily the enemy (for I have known Muslims whom I would trust) nor does it allow us to dismiss them as mere 'criminals'. The charge is, that in fact, in the way the Islamic world fueled Europe to jump into the renaissance (a decidedly good thing) the dregs of 20th century madness have sept into the Islamic world, transforming the more educated into self-righteous, neofundamentalist, eschatological crusaders, and fueled the leaders with a new ideology with which to manipulate the masses and prosecute their agendas. Good work, Western Left!

I guess a self-fulfilling prophecy is still a self-fulfilling prophecy.
